Having partnered with and recruited to Hospices for over 20 years, we have a very good understanding of the sector. There are many reasons why Hospices might struggle to recruit; we know how to counter these assumptions and enable you to hire better people. Here are four misconceptions of working in a Hospice:
1. Being in a hospice means that the patient will die soon
Receiving hospice care does not mean that death is imminent. The earlier an individual receives hospice care, the more opportunity there is to stabilise and maintain a patient's medical condition while addressing other needs.
2. Hospice care is just for the patient
Hospice care focuses on comfort, dignity, and emotional support. The quality of life for the patient, family members and others who are carers is the highest priority. A hospice can bring comfort, dignity, and peace to people facing a terminal illness and provide support and care for the family too.
3. To be eligible for hospice care, a patient must already be bedridden.
Hospice care is appropriate at the time of the terminal prognosis, regardless of the patient's physical condition. Many of the patients under hospice care continue to lead productive and rewarding lives.
4. Hospices are part of the NHS and receive government funding
Hospices are charities and are almost entirely funded by donations from the community. They typically receive around 30% funding from the NHS and local authorities. Collectively, charitable hospices in the UK need to raise around £1billion a year from their local communities which amounts to £2.7 million per day.
