Two Independent Board Directors (Voluntary, Unpaid)

Neighbours to Friends CIC | Scotland / UK-wide network | Remote-friendly

About Neighbours to Friends CIC

Neighbours to Friends CIC is a Scottish Community Interest Company (SC882207) creating recurring, face-to-face social connection opportunities for adults aged 18+. We use a simple structured social game as an icebreaker so that people can meet, talk and return to familiar local groups. Our first Helensburgh point was used to develop and test the delivery standard; the next phase is building a volunteer-led network under CIC governance.

The role

We are recruiting two independent, unpaid Board Directors to strengthen governance as the CIC grows. These are non-executive governance roles, not operational host roles. The directors will contribute independent judgement, constructive challenge and practical oversight while keeping the CIC's community purpose, asset lock and evidence standards at the centre of decisions.

What you will help with

  • Review strategy, priorities and major organisational decisions.
  • Provide independent scrutiny of governance, risk, finance and grant accountability.
  • Help the Board test whether plans are realistic, evidence-based and consistent with the CIC's community purpose.
  • Declare and manage conflicts of interest appropriately.
  • Support proportionate policies, controls and accountability as the network grows.

Who we are looking for

We are interested in people who can bring independent judgement and at least one useful area of experience such as governance, community development, finance, law/compliance, volunteering, partnerships, fundraising, social enterprise or organisational growth. Governance/finance experience is especially useful because several institutional funders require robust independent Board oversight and financial controls. Previous CIC board experience is useful but not essential. Reliability, integrity and willingness to challenge constructively matter more than having every skill.

Candidates must be legally eligible to act as a UK company director. Because this recruitment is intended to strengthen independent governance, each successful candidate must also be independent of the existing directors and must not be related to either existing director under relevant funder definitions (including family, marriage/civil partnership, long-term relationship or shared household). Independence and conflicts will be checked before any appointment; applying does not make a candidate independent or appointed.

Commitment and support

The role is voluntary and unpaid. Board participation is designed to be remote-friendly, with meeting frequency and practical availability discussed with shortlisted candidates. Reasonable induction materials and project/governance context will be provided. No appointment or Companies House filing occurs through this advert alone.

How to apply

Please email 98aano@gmail.com with the subject “Independent Board Director – Neighbours to Friends CIC”. Include a short note explaining why the role interests you, the experience or perspective you would bring, any current or potential conflicts of interest, and a CV or LinkedIn profile if available. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Closing date: 31 October 2026.

Neighbours to Friends CIC welcomes applicants from different backgrounds and communities. We are interested in thoughtful, independent people who care about practical social connection and good governance.
