Cambridge Online is a charity working across Cambridgeshire and the East of England helping disadvantaged (including disabled) people use computers and digital devices by providing education, training and advice to individuals and groups. Our aim is to broaden digital awareness and to raise levels of digital inclusion.

Treasurer Trustee, Cambridge Online

Key Purpose

The Treasurer Trustee helps ensure that Cambridge Online remains financially sustainable by providing financial oversight, supporting the CEO, and helping the Board make informed financial decisions.

Main Responsibilities

1. Financial Oversight

  • Monitor the charity’s financial position.
  • Ensure there are sufficient resources to achieve its objectives.
  • Consider both current finances and long-term sustainability.

2. Financial Policies

  • Lead reviews of financial policies and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure policies reflect good governance and charity best practice.

3. Financial Risk Management

  • Identify and assess financial risks.
  • Ensure appropriate financial controls and safeguards are in place.
  • Contribute to the charity’s overall risk management.

4. Support the Board

  • Help the CEO present financial information in a clear, accessible way.
  • Explain and review budgets, management accounts, and financial reports to trustees without financial backgrounds.
  • Support informed decision-making by the Board.

5. Financial Assurance

  • Ensure proper accounting records are maintained.
  • Monitor cash flow at Board level.
  • Act as one of the authorised bank signatories.

6. Annual Accounts

  • Work with the Independent Examiner or Auditor.
  • Oversee the Board’s review and approval of the annual accounts.
  • Help ensure the charity meets its statutory reporting obligations.

Skills

A strong candidate would typically have:

  • Qualified Accountant with minimum 5 years post qualification financial and accounting experience
  • Ability to interpret financial statements and budgets.
  • Strategic thinking rather than operational bookkeeping.
  • Good communication skills to explain financial matters clearly.
  • An understanding of charity tax, accounting, governance, risk, and compliance (or willingness to learn).
  • An interest in supporting digital inclusion and the charity’s mission.

 Time Commitment – around 10 hours per month

  • Attending Board meetings once a month as well as ad hoc meetings.
  • Reviewing financial reports between meetings.
  • Supporting the annual budget and accounts process.
  • Occasional meetings with the CEO or finance staff.
