Trustee and HR Adviser

Can you help us as a Trustee and also advise how we can:

• Recruit, retain and motivate Trustees and Research Associates
• Ensure our HR operates efficiently and effectively 

We are looking for a Trustee who can combine membership of the Board of Trustees with a lead role on HR.

As a Trustee you’ll:

• Ensure we remain true to our charitable purpose - The advancement of health and the prevention of sickness
• Review and approve our Annual Report and Accounts
• Support and provide advice on our work, including on our strategic development
• Attend four (virtual) Board meetings a year

As HR Adviser you’ll:

• Advise how best to recruit, retain and motivate Trustees and Research Associates
• Provide mentor support for our HR Administrator 
• Advise on the systems and procedures we need to enable efficient and effective recruitment and retention while meeting data protection requirements
• Help us streamline recruitment and retention, including through the use of AI and IT

About Health Action Research Group

As an independent health think tank, recognised as a charity by HMRC, we aim to encourage more preventative, evidence-based policies and approaches – to tackle the increasing health inequalities and mental and physical health issues the UK is facing.

Our research has enabled us to provided fresh thinking on health issues including: 

• Protecting Young People’s Mental Health
• Preventing Childhood Obesity
• How best to encourage Physical Activity.

We have also acted as a catalyst to research with university partners, on topics from Health Behaviour Change to Student Mental Health.

We are a virtual, voluntary organisation, with no paid staff. This means that compliance with employment law is not an issue for us. However, we rely on being able to recruit, retain and make effective use of expert volunteers – which is the important area you will be advising on. 

You’ll be working alongside our current Trustees, who bring a diverse range of expertise, and which will provide opportunities for continuing professional development.

As a virtual, voluntary organisation, meetings are via Zoom to enable participation as widely as possible.  

What are we looking for?

We'd like to hear from you if you can bring the following qualities and experience:

As a Trustee

• Enthusiasm for our guiding principle that prevention is better than cure
• The ability to exercise good, independent judgement and work effectively as a board member.
• Willingness to bring energy, expertise and commitment to the role, and potentially broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
• Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

As HR Adviser

• At least 5 years HR-related experience in the UK
• A graduate
• CIPD Level 5 or above
• Evidence of effective HR management 
• An interest in the potential of HR to contribute to organizational success

NB Evidence of HR management in not-for-profit organisations and/or in relation to volunteers is not essential but would be an added recommendation

As a Trustee and HR Adviser you will be well placed to influence our development as a health think tank – helping ensure we have the human resources to achieve our aim of encouraging a more preventative approach to ill health in the UK. 

Location: You can work from anywhere in the UK 

Time commitment: 1-3 hours / week
