CASBA Advocacy is looking for new Trustees to join the Board. We are looking for new Trustees with skills and experience in the following areas: 

  • Charity governance
  • Finance
  • Safeguarding
  • Fundraising

Responsible to: Chair of Trustees

Estimate of time needed: 5 hours per month

Location: South Birmingham

About CASBA

CASBA’S vision is a society where people with learning disabilities live as equal citizens. We help people to get their voices heard and their rights accepted.

CASBA empowers people with learning disabilities to speak up for themselves, express their views, make their choices, and be valued as citizens. We co-produce all our services with citizens. 

They are included at all levels within CASBA, including the Trustee Board.

About the role

As a Trustee, you will champion the work of our staff and volunteers, supporting them through your knowledge and skills to help us continue to provide our services and empower our citizens.

The role of a Trustee is to: 

  • Ensure CASBA is complying with its governing document and the law. 
  • Ensure CASBA has agreed goals and monitors its performance against agreed targets. 
  • Oversee CASBA Advocacy’s financial plans and budgets to ensure that CASBA remains financially stable. 
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation including having appropriate policies and procedures in place.  
  • Ensure that risks are identified, monitored and controlled effectively.  
  • Ensure CASBA meets its legal accounting and reporting requirements. 
  • Follow proper and formal arrangements for the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and payment of the Chief Executive. 
  • Keep abreast of changes in CASBA Advocacy’s operating environment.  
  • Contribute to regular reviews of CASBA Advocacy’s own governance.   
  • Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions as appropriate 
  • Act legally and in good faith to promote and protect CASBA Advocacy’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and any third-party interests. 

Person specification

Trustees should use their skills, knowledge and experience to help the Board reach sound decisions. This may involve leading discussions, identifying key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, and evaluating or offering advice on other areas in which the Trustee has expertise.

 In addition to experience in one of the key areas identified above, applicants must demonstrate:

  • commitment to CASBA’s vision, mission and values 
  • willingness and ability to understand and accept responsibilities and liabilities as trustees and to act in the best interests of the organisation
  • ability to think creatively and strategically  
  • exercise sound, independent judgement
  • work as part of a team 
  • willingness to contribute to discussions
  • a strong personal commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

Time Commitment 

  • Must be able to attend up to 6 – 8 meetings per year, generally held every two months. 
  • Meetings are currently held on Tuesday evenings, typically 6pm – 8pm in the Selly Oak/Northfield areas of Birmingham. Trustees may attend online although the ability to attend at least occasional face-to-face meetings would be desirable.
  • An all-day AGM, held in November
  • Sub committees as and when needed

Successful applicants will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check.
