About our organisation

We are a local Scout group serving Shirley Warren and the surrounding Southampton community. Our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts enjoy games, outdoor activities, creative projects and community involvement. Volunteers make these experiences possible, helping young people feel included and develop independence at each stage of their Scouting journey.

What we want you to achieve

Help us deliver a varied, safe and welcoming programme where every young person can take part, learn something new and celebrate their progress. Your contribution will support friendships, practical skills, badges and awards, while helping our teams offer enjoyable sessions consistently.

Your responsibilities

  • Work with section volunteers and young people to plan and deliver age appropriate games, activities and projects. Bring your interests and ideas, and help young people shape their programme.
  • Help set up, supervise activities and clear away equipment. Encourage participation, positive behaviour and teamwork, adapting activities with the team to meet individual needs.
  • Support young people as they work towards badges and awards, and help with attendance or activity records where agreed.
  • Follow Scouts safety and safeguarding procedures, the Yellow Card and activity risk assessments. Raise safety issues promptly and report safeguarding concerns through the Scouts reporting process.
  • Communicate respectfully with young people, parents and carers, and fellow volunteers. Keep personal information confidential and support a welcoming, inclusive environment.
  • Complete the learning required for your role. Optional trips, community events and camps can be included in your agreed responsibilities as your confidence and availability allow.

Who we are looking for

You do not need previous Scouting experience or specialist outdoor skills. We welcome adults from different backgrounds who enjoy encouraging young people, work well in a team and are willing to learn. Patience, a positive approach and reliability with your agreed commitments matter. As an inclusive organization please let us know if there are any adjustments that would help you volunteer.

Benefits to you

  • Make a visible difference in your local community and see young people gain confidence and new skills.
  • Meet other volunteers, build friendships and enjoy activities alongside the team.
  • Develop useful experience in teamwork, communication, organisation and leadership for your personal development or CV.
  • Explore your interests, learn practical skills and access Scouts learning and development opportunities.

Support and training

You will be welcomed and supported by the Group Lead Volunteer and your section team, with an introduction to how sessions work and practical guidance as you get started. Tasks will be shared and agreed so you can develop confidence at a manageable pace.

We will guide you through the Scouts joining process, including the relevant checks, references and DBS disclosure. We will help you access the learning required for a Section Team Member, including Growing Roots, safety, safeguarding, delivering a great programme and First Response first aid. Further learning and activity skills can be explored as your role develops.

How to apply

Please include your name, contact details, preferred section or sections, availability and a short note about why you would like to volunteer or any interests you could share.
