Look after a Guide Dog Mum in your home

Hours: The dog will live in your home, from 12 months old, for around six years whilst they are in the breeding programme (with the option to re-home after this, once the guide dog mum retires at around seven years-old.) 

Guide Dogs helps people with sight loss live the life they choose.

If you have space in your home and heart, for a guide dog mum who will be bringing the next generation of guide dogs in the world, then this could be the role for you! A role where you can care and nurture for a guide dog mum and plenty of little puppies when they arrive. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Providing a safe, secure, and welcoming home environment for the Guide Dogs Mum.
  • Ensuring the Guide Dogs Mum is fed, exercised, and cared for to maintain excellent health.
  • Using positive reinforcement training techniques to teach or maintain behaviours.
  • Ensuring the dog is not left alone for more than 4 hours in a 24-hour period.
  • Providing support to the Guide Dogs Mum when giving birth in your home and caring for a litter of puppies in your home for 7 to 8 weeks.

Ideally you will: 

  • Have a home with a safely fenced garden.
  • Have dog handling experience but not essential.
  • Have a clean driving licence is desirable and access to a car you are insured to drive.
  • Be willing to travel to the agreed Guide Dogs Centre when required.

  • Dog knowledge, care, and handling
  • Looking after your Guide Dog mum and her puppies
