Suicide Awareness Prevention UK (SAPUK) is a non-profit Community Interest Company founded in 2016. We support people experiencing suicidal thoughts, emotional distress, or overwhelming life challenges. Our mission is simple: guide people from crisis toward hope, help them regain their strength and sense of safety, and support them in moving forward with their lives.

We offer a range of free, accessible support services:

  • Confidential online chat support for real time emotional support, active listening, and signposting
  • Safe Spaces (online and in-person) where people can talk, decompress, and feel understood
  • SAPUK Life Coaches who provide structured guidance, confidence-building, and personal development support
  • A community Food Pantry offering essential items to people and families facing financial hardship
  • “I Don’t Know Anyone Either” social events are designed to reduce loneliness and help people build connections

SAPUK – IT Volunteer (Advanced Excel & System Support)

Role Title

IT Volunteer – Advanced Excel & System Support

Responsible To

Director of People services

Location

Remote (online), with occasional virtual meetings

Time Commitment

Flexible – typically 4 hours per week, depending on organisational needs and volunteer availability.

Role Purpose

To support SAPUK’s digital operations by running system checks, troubleshooting technical issues, and using advanced Excel skills to improve reporting, organisation, and workflow efficiency.

IT Volunteer with strong technical skills to help maintain our systems, support our team, and improve our digital workflows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run routine computer health checks, including performance diagnostics, security scans, and system maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot issues such as slow performance, access problems, software errors, or connectivity concerns.
  • Maintain digital systems, shared drives, and file structures to ensure smooth operation.
  • Use advanced Excel skills to create, update, and improve spreadsheets, dashboards, and reporting tools.
  • Support the development of efficient digital workflows and documentation.
  • Provide clear, patient guidance to volunteers and team members when resolving technical issues.
  • Ensure all work aligns with SAPUK’s data protection, confidentiality, and safeguarding standards.

Essential Skills & Experience

We are specifically looking for volunteers who can demonstrate real‑world experience using the following:

Advanced Excel Skills

You should be confident with:

  • PivotTables and PivotCharts
  • Advanced formulas (e.g., XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS, IFS)
  • Data cleaning and transformation (Power Query, validation, structured tables)
  • Conditional formatting (including custom rules)
  • Creating automated or semi‑automated reporting sheets
  • (Optional) Basic VBA or macro experience

System Checks & Troubleshooting

You should be able to run and interpret:

  • Windows performance diagnostics
  • Disk health checks and storage monitoring
  • Antivirus and security scans
  • Driver and update checks
  • Network and connectivity troubleshooting
  • General system maintenance tasks

What We’d Like You to Demonstrate

Instead of a test, we ask applicants to describe real examples of how they have used these skills in a workplace or volunteer setting. For example:

  • A spreadsheet you built to solve a problem or improve a process
  • A time you diagnosed and resolved a computer performance issue
  • How you’ve used Excel to analyse data or create dashboards
  • How you’ve improved digital organisation or system reliability

These examples help us understand your practical experience and approach to problem‑solving.
