We are looking for someone to lead and support Parents 1st who shares our vision to build peer support initiatives in local communities that help parents to give their babies the best start in life.

Evidence is clear that effective volunteer programmes make a unique and valuable contribution to achieving outcomes for babies, parents and communities and Parents 1st are passionate about mobilising these enormous strengths in our local communities.

Volunteer Community Parents are mothers, fathers, grandparents or carers who have particular personal qualities and life experiences. They are ambassadors for their communities and are drawn from the same areas as the parents they support.  They establish trusting peer relationships as early as possible during pregnancy and offer focused support throughout pregnancy, during labour and birth if needed, and onto early family life.  There is a widely held view that public services cannot continue to be delivered in the same way as they are now. Our model of volunteering offers innovative solutions that address early prevention harnessing social action, alleviating escalation of need and reducing pressure on public services.

Through our City & Guilds Accreditation Centre volunteers also benefit from unique, high quality accredited training (level 3) leading to national qualifications derived from their experience in the natural volunteer setting. This demonstrates how they meet the National Occupational Standards for Work with Parents and provides them with pathways to employment. Our skilled volunteer supervision process is also critical for nurturing reflection, confidence and new life skills, and supports our joint endeavours to ensure that support given to families is safe and effective.

We are looking for a new Chairperson to head up our board as the current Chairperson has decided to step down after a number of years in the role.

The key tasks include -

  • Providing clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • Providing leadership to the Board so as to enable them to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation.
  • Contributing good commercial awareness and knowledge of developing and growing a small business to lead Parents 1st towards a strong and sustainable future.
  • Working with the Chief Executive to ensure Parents 1st is managed efficiently, effectively and in line with its constitutional and statutory obligations, its code of conduct and best practice.

This role presents an exciting opportunity to work with an ambitious social enterprise at a key point in its development. We are developing our role as a National Development Agency as well as expanding direct delivery of our local Programme in Essex. Commitments and Remuneration

The new Chair will be expected to attend Board meetings at least once a quarter in Central London as well as to provide 7-14 hours support a month to the Chief Executive at the organisation’s office in Essex.

In recognition of this commitment, Parents 1st is offering an annual stipend of £2,000 per annum.  Board members are also able to claim expenses as appropriate.
