Due to an internal promotion, an exciting opportunity has arisen within a University for a Head of School - Computing within the College of Science and Engineering.

This is a full-time, 6-month appointment to provide senior leadership cover while a permanent recruitment process is underway. The role as Head of School will require a regular on-site presence, with a minimum of three days per week on campus.

This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for leading, enhancing and growing the academic provision and business development of the School.  As Head of School you will play a key role in shaping the School’s strategic direction, ensuring it delivers high-quality, market-relevant programmes and contributes to wider institutional priorities.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership as part of the College Senior Management Team, contributing to the delivery of institutional priorities and KPIs
  • Lead the development and positioning of the School’s academic portfolio, ensuring it is innovative, demand-led and future-focused
  • Drive excellence in teaching, learning and student experience, aligned to sector metrics such as TEF, NSS and REF
  • Lead and inspire academic and professional services teams, building a high-performing and collaborative culture
  • Oversee research, scholarship and knowledge exchange activity, strengthening the School’s external impact and reputation
  • Take responsibility for financial performance, resource planning and income generation
  • Develop and maintain external partnerships, including industry links and collaborative provision
  • Use data and insight to drive performance, student recruitment and continuous improvement
  • Lead on change and enhancement initiatives, reviewing structures, processes and ways of working to support delivery
 
About you
 
We’re keen to speak with candidates who can demonstrate: 
  • Significant senior leadership experience within higher education, ideally at Head of School / Department or Associate Dean level
  • A doctorate in a relevant discipline and a strong academic background within Computing or a related STEM field
  • A proven track record of leading high-performing teams and delivering through others
  • Experience of driving quality in teaching, research and student outcomes, aligned to sector frameworks (TEF, REF, NSS etc.)
  • Strong commercial awareness and financial management capability, including budget responsibility
  • Experience of leading change, performance management and organisational improvement initiatives
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence across complex environments
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with a focus on innovation, continuous improvement and delivering impact
