General Trustee

About Us

Jinja DEAF (Deaf Education Access Fund) is a charity supporting the education of deaf children and young people in Jinja District, Uganda.

We promote equal access to education and employment with a focus on quality sign-bilingual education and promote activities which foster understanding and inclusion within their families and communities.

Our current activities include funding full-time sign language instructors and interpreters in schools, providing grants for learning materials and sponsoring sign language and inclusion workshops for parents and educators.

For these young people, this support means the difference between gaining an education, fluent communication, opportunities and social relationships, and staying home in isolation, devalued and without language or hope for change.

The current board is made up of 5 volunteer trustees based around the UK with mixed backgrounds.

About the Role

We are looking to recruit to our trustee board. The board works together to steer decisions to meet our strategic vision. We closely monitor activities and spending to ensure responsible scrutiny of funds.

This role can be carried out remotely. Our board of trustees meet three to six times per year in London or remotely and communicate by email in the interim. All trustees are volunteers, and we have no office so all money raised by our generous supporters is directed to our activities.

About You

If you are enthusiastic about making a big difference to a small charity, then we would really like to hear from you. No prior trusteeship is necessary though any experience working with the deaf community, third sector organisations or in education settings would be welcome. The best qualification however is enthusiasm and energy about advancing the education of deaf young people in Jinja. This role can be carried out entirely remotely within the UK.
