Why NYA needed TPP's support

Amid a period of significant organisational growth and digital transformation, NYA recognised the need to strengthen its senior leadership team by appointing a visionary Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This pivotal role would drive financial sustainability, governance excellence, and innovation, while embedding NYA’s core values of collaboration, inclusion, determination, authenticity, and boldness.

What TPP did

TPP’s Leadership & Governance team began with a comprehensive briefing involving NYA’s CEO. This session was critical to:

  • Understanding NYA’s strategy, ambition for growth and any challenges
  • Clarifying the CFO’s remit, which included oversight of cyber security and IT, and responsibility for working closely with the Commercial Director and newly appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) to deliver operational excellence.
  • Identifying the behaviours and leadership qualities essential for success in a values-driven organisation.

This insight informed every stage of the campaign, from attraction strategy to assessment design.

Campaign & candidate attraction

To attract high-calibre candidates, we delivered a multi-channel campaign:

  • Advertising: Featured the role on sector-specific job boards and made it ‘featured’ on TPP’s website.
  • Direct engagement: Included the opportunity in candidate newsletters and targeted alerts to our network and database.
  • Headhunting: Conducted a proactive search informed by industry research, database intelligence, and online marketing.
  • Social media: Designed and deployed animated job cards to boost visibility and engagement across platforms.
  • Candidate experience: Provided a detailed candidate pack and microsite (see below), ensuring clarity and a professional application process.

Microsite

TPP created a detailed microsite for candidates to be able to gain a more in depth understanding of the role and organisation. This included a welcome page, key benefits, person specification and application page.

What TPP achieved

Assessment

From nearly 200 enquiries, 50 candidates submitted formal applications. Sixteen were longlisted and interviewed by TPP using a bespoke framework:

  • Customised interview questions: Developed to assess values, behaviours, and technical competencies, including strategic financial leadership, experience with government funding, income diversification, governance/risk and cyber security oversight.
  • Competency & values assessment: Explored leadership style, ability to embed inclusion, and collaboration with commercial and operational leaders.
  • In-depth candidate reporting: We produced a comprehensive report summarising findings, scoring candidates against agreed criteria, and providing clear recommendations.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Presented findings to NYA’s CEO and Deputy CEO, supporting transparent, evidence-based decision-making.

Results

NYA shortlisted 4 candidates for final stage interviews. These were conducted in person on one day and involved a two-panel process (one candidate withdrew due to illness on the day):

  • Panel one: Focused on structured interview questions, assessing values, behaviours, and technical competencies.
  • Panel two: Assessed candidates’ presentation task, testing strategic insight, governance awareness, and ability to communicate complex ideas clearly.

This robust approach ensured NYA could confidently select a candidate who not only met the technical requirements but also aligned with organisational culture and future ambitions.

The appointed CFO brings extensive experience in strategic finance and governance across leading charities, with a background in supporting CEOs and Boards to deliver impactful strategies. Their expertise spans finance, risk, HR, operations, and digital governance, with a strong focus on collaboration, people development, and creating inclusive workplaces. Crucially, they have a proven track record of partnering with commercial leaders and a newly appointed COO to drive income diversification, strengthen governance, and enable sustainable growth.

The appointment of NYA’s new CFO marks a significant milestone for the organisation. Their expertise will underpin NYA’s financial sustainability, governance, and strategic growth, supporting the organisation as it celebrates its 60th anniversary and embarks on a new phase of impact for young people across England.
