Responsibilities & Duties for IT Engineer Roles
In some organisations, IT Engineer jobs are synonymous with the IT Support Officer / Helpdesk function, but in most cases this role is a more in-depth, technical post. IT Engineers require the same technical know-how of an IT Support / Helpdesk role, but with a more analytical focus. IT Infrastructure Engineer / Analysts will often get involved in the design, planning, and improvement of the IT infrastructure of an organisation, and will sometimes take on projects over a period of time, such as a new software implementation or hardware rollout.
Skills Required for IT Engineer Jobs
The IT Infrastructure Engineer / Analyst will always be thinking ahead as to how things can be improved or streamlined, so strong analytical skills are key. A keen flair for ideas and the ability to listen and respond to the input of other staff on IT matters is very important. Qualification by experience is usually favoured for an IT Engineer, and this is often a post which serves as a step up for someone who has been in an IT Support or Helpdesk post for a few years. Sometimes, qualifications in infrastructure such as Cisco CCNA or CCNP can be advantageous.
