Over recent years, finance divisions in charities have been steadily moving away from a traditional transactions focus and towards becoming key strategic business partners; assisting with decision making. A Finance Business Partner is a key role in this new, modern Finance Department.
Responsibilities & Duties for Finance Business Partner Roles
A Finance Business Partner shares many of the duties of a more traditional Management Accountant position (financial analysis, preparation of budgets, management reporting etc). However in this model, finance is a value-add function, and the Finance Business Partner will be expected to combine a solid understanding of accounting with the ability to explain complex financial principles to non-finance colleagues in the organisation. Finance Business Partners often sit within the team they support, which further strengthens their knowledge of the organisation.
Skills Required for Finance Business Partner Jobs
A high performing Business Partner needs to have both technical expertise and ‘softer’ influencing and negotiating skills. They will have a desire to understand a broad range of commercial issues, bringing this to life for their 'customers' and be able to explain the relevant context. Other key skills are the ability to listen, interpret, negotiate and challenge.
