Responsibilities & duties for Directors of Policy & Advocacy

A Director of Policy/Advocacy is primarily responsible for deciding how the ethos of the not for profit organisation is enacted, and how it’s beliefs (and the beliefs of its supporters) can best be expressed to relevant external influencers, from the general public to parliamentary officials or UN delegates. This role will provide the bedrock to the activities of other teams, particularly fundraising, communications and operations, proving them with the primary aims that their activities must support. Policy and Advocacy Directors may act as a key media spokesperson for the organisation, lead on key policy documents and manage the partnership with key influencing figures at a senior level.

Skills required for Directors of Policy & Advocacy

In organisations where advocacy and policy are not key operational areas for the organisation (such as care providing organisations), there may not be a specific Director of Policy/Advocacy. However, if advocacy is a key activity of a charity then this will be a key role for the Senior Management Team. The first and most important skill that will be necessary for every activity or project undertaken will be the ability to influence the people already invested in the cause – your organisations staff. Policy changes will always have an effect on existing staff and volunteers and the effective ability to gain staff input and incorporate it into new policies will be vital.

​Further requirements of a successful Director of Policy/Advocacy vary – some may require research skills to help collect and analyse data. Others may be required to represent the organisation publically to media agencies, the general public, the Government and higher. Whilst this role rarely asks for formal qualifications in Policy/Advocacy, many will require experience in the field relevant to their organisation to ensure that the knowledge and understand candidates have of the field is sufficient.
