Responsibilities & duties for Directors of Fundraising

A Director of Fundraising will provide strategic leadership, management and coordination for all activities specifically designed to raise voluntary income. Most Fundraising Director jobs involve direct responsibility for some fundraising, particularly major gifts, although the focus is likely to be strategic management – especially for larger not for profits.

TPP also regularly recruits people in Head of Fundraising roles, or roles at an equivalent level. A Head of Fundraising is more likely to have a ‘hands on’ focus and a direct, outward facing role in income generation. Roles at this level may report to a Director of Fundraising and have a more specialised area of fundraising to co-ordinate e.g. Major Donors, Trusts & Foundations, Direct Marketing, Corporate, Legacy, Statutory or Community and Events. If they are an overwhelmingly important part of the fundraising strategy for a not for profit organisation, these roles may have the title of Director as well.

Skills required for Directors of Fundraising

Experience of income generation will be vital for all Director of Fundraising roles. It is also beneficial to have experience fundraising from multiple sources such as major donors, legacy etc. A personable character is beneficial to all fundraising activity, and would be expected from any senior fundraiser. The ability to co-ordinate fundraising campaigns targeted towards multiple individuals and groups is vital in this role – crucially, if must be done with integrity, maintaining a consistent message throughout. For a Head of Fundraising, the ability to tailor the consistent organisations message and fundraising material into material appropriate for your specialist target area is vital, as is the experience to understand what material is likely to be most efficient and effective for your specialist group. Although generally no formal qualifications are required, organisations such as the Institute of Fundraising offer formal qualifications which can be advantageous.
