Deafblind UK are looking for a volunteer who can regularly visit a deafblind person(s) in their own home or at another mutually convenient location, to enable them to engage with digital technology. Using ‘off the shelf’ devices, eg. IPad or tablet PC’s, to demonstrate and train the deafblind person(s) to make safe and effective use of the device(s). Reducing deafblind people’s isolation, and improving their quality of life.

The Digital Befriender role is time-limited to meet the needs of each deafblind person(s) confidence, in accessing and using technology to benefit their own quality of life.

Nb: Deafblind UK loans all required devices to our volunteers, but each remains the property of Deafblind UK. No additional accessibility software is required.

Duties

-          To establish and build a befriending relationship.

-          To regularly visit an identified deafblind person at a mutually convenient time and place, ideally weekly.

-          To effectively demonstrate the use and accessibility of appropriate devices to a deafblind person (s), to include a defined set of applications and websites.

-          To encourage the deafblind person to express their interests and desires for using technology, to help identify possible methods to involve these using the technology available. Eg, wishing to contact their grandchildren.

-          To provide advice, information and guidance on available technologies

-          To teach and train the deafblind person to use the devices as appropriate to meet their aspirations, or to meet the defined set of applications and websites.

-          To supervise deafblind people to access and create their chosen device, websites or applications to meet their aspirations such as creating email addresses / profiles / etc.

-          To teach and train deafblind people to use potentially complex processes in an understandable and accessible way.

-          To provide regular updates of your volunteering activity to your volunteer co-ordinator

-          To provide regular commitment of time and provide as much notice as possible of any absence.

Person Specification

-          A proven interest in technology, or the interest and motivation to learn more about “off the shelf” technology, eg. tablets, e-readers, etc

-          An ability to communicate potentially complex processes in an accessible way with a confident manner. (Training will be provided)

-          Willing to empathise with individuals differing levels of understanding and confidence in accessing technology

-          Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations, to encourage individuals to try our technology

-          Approachable and patient nature to supporting people with varying communication needs, and experiences of technology

-          To be able to confidently relay information in one on one situations.

-          Willing to learn communication and guiding techniques to meet the needs of the Deafblind person / people (training will be provided)

-          To adhere to the requirements of Deafblind UK’s volunteer policies and procedures including the Code of Conduct as outlined in the Volunteer Handbook.
