Job Description - EXPIRED

TRUSTEE ROLE AND OBJECTIVES

Pump Aid is a UK registered charity which operates predominately in Malawi and, while it may previously have seen the installation of a water pump as its primary goal, its new strategic direction now sets the provision of safe water as merely the first step towards improving the health and resilience of a whole community.

They currently have vacancies for two new Trustees and a Treasurer.

The primary role of Pump Aid’s trustees is to ensure that the charity fulfils its objects as defined in its Memorandum and Articles of Association.  Trustees are also directors of Pump Aid’s charitable and trading companies for the purposes of company law.  In addition to the collective responsibilities of all trustees, the Treasurer oversees the financial management of the charity and monitors its financial sustainability.

Pump Aid’s trustees meet four times per year, in January, April, July and October, with the October meeting including its AGM and an extended away day to work on the strategic development of the organisation.  Trustees are elected for an initial three-year term and, after that, are eligible to stand for a further three-year term.  Trustee appointments are honorary, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

  • Experience at a senior level in a complex organisation
  • An understanding of one or more of the public, not for profit and private sectors and a knowledge of funding streams and investment procurement.

  • The ability to challenge constructively
  • Excellent communication skills, socially adept at all levels, including confidence in speaking with the media and on public platforms
  • Ability to meet the Charity Commission’s eligibility and probity criteria
  • Commitment to devoting the time and effort necessary to fulfil the responsibilities outlined in the collective responsibilities.

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of WASH sector / international development issues

  • A positive approach and an ability to think strategically and creatively, with proven leadership skills
  • A readiness to deal with challenging situations
  • An accomplished networker with political sensitivity and the ability to maintain good relationships with key partner organisations
  • Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TREASURER

Essential

Knowledge and Experience

  • Recognised financial qualification with experience gained at Board level
  • A current understanding of financial governance and experience of scrutinising risks, policies and strategies
