Job Description - EXPIRED

The Egypt Exploration Society is a London based Registered Charity (No. 212384) and a Limited Company Registered in England (No.25816). The Society exists to advance the education of the public with reference to Ancient and Medieval Egypt, and to promote art, culture and heritage by raising knowledge, awareness and understanding of the language, history, arts, culture, religion and all other matters relating to Ancient and Medieval Egypt.

Since its founding in 1882 the Society’s mission has been to explore ancient Egyptian sites and monuments, to create a lasting record of the remains, to generate enthusiasm for, and increase knowledge and understanding of, Egypt’s past and to raise awareness of the importance of protecting its heritage. To this end the Society supports archaeological research projects throughout Egypt. We rely on the support of our members and the wider public to fund our work and run a programme of educational events in Egypt, the UK and beyond to convey the results to our audience. The Society is now at an important and exciting point in its evolution as it re-invents itself for the C21st.

The EES has offices in London and Cairo. Membership currently stands at approximately 2,000. The Society is governed by a Board of Trustees, which includes the three Officers of the Society: the Chair, Vice-Chair and Treasurer. The current Treasurer’s term of office ends in October 2016.

We are now seeking to find a successor who will take a leadership role in strategic planning, maintain an overview of the charity’s financial affairs, to seek to ensure the financial viability of the charity and to ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained; in so doing the Treasurer works closely with the Finance Manager, the Director and the Chair of the Board of Trustees. The Treasurer leads the Society’s Finance Committee and also serves on other committees including the Fieldwork and Research Committee which acts as the Society's Grants Committee.

The Treasurer must be or become a member of the Society: the appointment is for an initial period of three years renewable for a further three.
