TPP’s client, a bespoke charity set up to develop key independent living skills and empower disabled people in its local area is seeking a creative, solution focused and adaptable Service Manager to lead their energetic team.
Our client is an charity whose key focus is to develop the independence of their students and empower them to understand and make choices in life. This is achieved by developing specialised workshops which meet 6 core outcomes. Working with the student, their family and professionals; an in-depth assessment is completed and a personalised timetable is drawn up to meet their personal needs and goals. An example of some of these goals would be; to travel to college unaided, to cook a healthy meal, to play an instrument. This timetable is often amended following progress reviews where goals are met, extended or amended based on the students’ choices. Over 50% of their income comes from personal budgets, and over 90% is spent on charitable activities.
The centre runs workshops throughout the week and is heavily reliant on the time, passion and efforts of the committed staff and volunteers. Leading this team is the Service Manager, a key hire required to manage and lead the service operations and coordination.
The Service Manager is the heart of the service, leading the team by example as well as coordinating the rotas and offering clear and concise advice and guidance around key legislation which affect the students. Representing the organisation at key events and meetings and maintaining an excellent reputation in the sector is also a key element of this role. The organisations’ culture calls for continuous targeted staff development, so the Service Manager will be expected to work closely with each staff member to identify a clear training program for them which will develop their skills to meet the needs of the students and to empower them to be confident to deal with situations as they arise. As this is a small charity and has a ‘family, all hands on deck culture’, the Service Manager will need to build relationships with the students and their families in order to create the personalised programs and oversee 6 monthly reviews, as well as get involved when there are staff shortages.
To be considered for this fantastic role you will need to demonstrate a can do approach and be able to identify solutions. The successful candidate will need to be adaptable to the needs of the service and be upbeat and enthusiastic. A background working with people with learning disabilities is essential and significant experience of leading and managing a staff team is also essential. Due to the requirements of the service, the candidate will need to have exceptional organisational skills and understand how a HR function would operate; this includes solid understanding of risk assessment processes and development of strategies to tackle the identified risks. An understanding of national and local legislation and policy affecting people with learning disabilities including personal budgets is also essential.
