Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF)
Head of Major Gifts, £50,000 - 2 year fixed term contract
AREF is a new charity, established in 2015, which seeks to build Africa's capacity to tackle the significant health challenges its populations face by delivering excellence in health research in Africa. AREF focuses on outstanding early-career African scientists - raising funds to enable the development of the next generation of research leaders. It is an African-led charity, for African scientists committed to improving African health.
The Head of Major Gifts role will work closely with the AREF Director and will lead on the development, monitoring and delivery of the charity's fundraising strategy. You will identify a stream of potential donors with the capacity and interest to support AREF's priority programmes, focus on building close relationships then tailor your engagement to maximise the chances of securing substantial gifts. You will report in a timely and effective fashion to donors, and contribute impactful content to the AREF communications strategy.
Whilst work is very much underway to build a diverse, sustainable funding base for AREF, this is a fantastic opportunity for a senior fundraiser to join the team and to play a lead role in helping to finalise and then implement its first formalised fundraising strategy.
In order to be considered for this post, you should have previous experience of shaping and managing a portfolio of philanthropic donations involving high net-worth donors. You will be a confident communicator, be well-organised and be comfortable working within a small, emerging organisation operating internationally.
The post-holder will be located with the Medical Research Foundation (AREF's parent charity) team in Central London, but may require international travel.
