SHINE (Support and Help IN Education) is an education charity that is changing the lives of disadvantaged young people across the country with a particular focus on London & Manchester. We provide them with extra English and Maths support and creative learning opportunities after school, on Saturdays and in the school holidays.
Established in 1999, SHINE has grown to an organisation that makes annual grant payments of £2m - £2.5m and is supporting more than 13,500 children annually across the country. We are looking to expand and grow our fundraising activities and so are seeking additional support. This is an opportunity to join our small fundraising team and learn more about working in the charity sector whilst making a real impact. This voluntary role has a clear focus on prospects research - finding out about potential funders to help us decide who to approach and how to approach them.
To support the SHINE team in its fundraising activities, particularly with researching prospective Major Donors, Trusts & Foundations and Corporate Partnerships using online sources and specialist prospect research tools. These tasks will include:
*Conducting prospect research on a list of potential donors
*Sourcing and researching new prospective donors and partnerships
*Distributing and storing this information internally, to allow key information to be accessed in the future
*Updating the database with the relevant information, in line with data protection legislation
*Producing research briefs for the Fundraising Team and providing supporting research for events and possibly attending these events where appropriate
*Assist with SHINE fundraising applications to other trust, foundations and corporates as they arise
Skills & experience
*No prior knowledge or experience of prospect research or fundraising is necessary
*You will need to be confident carrying out internet-based research and using Microsoft Office to summarise information accurately
*A natural curiosity about people is key, as is an interest in research
*Attention to detail
*Ability to work independently and to take the initiative
6 month role starting in April 2015. 1 - 2 days a week, exact days are flexible with some scope for working from home.
We will pay for reasonable travel expenses incurred.
As a result of this internship, you will gain the experience of working within the charity sector with exposure to a wide range of roles within the team, including senior staff. In particular, you will gain experience of Major Donor and Corporate fundraising and will learn prospect research techniques and how to use a variety of prospect research tools. There will also be opportunities for you to see SHINE's projects first-hand and gain a greater understanding of our work.
