Job Description

Wac Arts in Belsize Park, London is an independent charity founded in 1978. Its mission is to support gifted young people who face exceptional challenges and hardship, expand their life opportunities and aspirations through performing arts and media. Since its foundation, Wac Arts has touched the lives of over thirty thousand young people.

This is a unique time to join the Wac Arts Board, in October we transitioned from being a founder led organisation to appointing a new Chief Executive. This new Chief Executive and the Senior Management team are moving forward the Board’s work of the last two years, to build a new, robust and sustainable business model which financially underpins the inspiring work with young people that has been consistently delivered for almost four decades.

To deliver the organisation’s potential, the Board is looking for an inspiring new Trustee with a real passion for the work we do, very strong and demonstrable experience of being an expert in the field of finance and or accounting.

General responsibilities

  • To actively contribute to the Board’s role in giving firm strategic direction to Wac Arts, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • To support management in the ongoing transformation of the organization and ensure that Wac Arts uses its resources effectively
  • To support the organisation’s work through regular attendance at its events and, where appropriate, be an ambassador for the organisation externally.

Time commitment and location of meetings

  • Board meetings: The Board meets in the early evening four times per year at Hampstead Town Hall. One of the meetings is a half-day strategy session.
  • Sub-committees: The Finance Sub-committee meets four times per year depending on business requirements.
  • Active support: All Trustees actively support the organization in terms of the time, as well as financially to the extent they feel comfortable. Trustees are also expected to attend performances and other meetings or events as representatives of the Board.
  • Probationary period: Prospective Trustees are invited to attend the Board as observers for the first 6 months before being formally elected to their post. This is to give both sides an opportunity to ensure a good fit for the organization, and ensure governance stability.

Term of office

Trustees are appointed to serve for three years, subject to review after one year, and normally for two terms with a maximum period not exceeding nine years.

Experience and Person Specification

Essential Experience:

  • Experience and an established reputation in the field of finance or accountancy and/or business experience that includes senior level budgetary decision making
  • Senior level involvement in business planning with responsibility for financial strategy
  • Experience of organizational change and development
  • An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee.
  • Experience of advocating on behalf of organisations and causes and arguing their case successfully, in order to raise their profile.
  • A belief in ensuring all young people can access excellent performing arts and media `training opportunities.

Desirable Experience:

  • Accounting qualification
  • An understanding of risk management
  • Experience of HLF Buildings and capital campaigns an advantage
