Job Description - EXPIRED

The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) provides social, welfare and care services to Jewish victims of Nazi oppression living in Great Britain.

Founded in 1941 by Jewish refugees from central Europe, the AJR has extensive experience attending to the needs of Holocaust refugees and survivors who settled in Britain.  Membership of the AJR is extended to all Jewish victims of Nazi oppression and their spouses and we also welcome as members the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors and refugees, the Second and Third Generations.

The AJR is currently looking for volunteers in both the Manchester and Macclesfield areas to undertake a befriending role for holocaust survivors/refugees with memory loss.

The Association has members all over London, both North and South who are living with dementia, both mild and some severe.  They look forward to just seeing people.

Volunteers can:

  1.  Just chat with them about anything.
  2. Discuss the latest news and read the newspaper to them
  3. Some of our members like to Play Chess, or scrabble or rummikub.
  4. Listen to music with them
  5. Show them photographs of anything interesting
  6. Sometimes speak to them in their mother tongue
  7. Some members like to discuss their experiences.

If you would like to spare 30 minutes to an hour a week visiting a holocaust refugee, once a week or fortnightly, in their home or care home, then the AJR would like to meet you.  It helps to reduce their isolation and loneliness and give them a specialised one to one befriending.

If you would like to volunteer please contact naomi@ajr.org.uk for further information.
