Job Description - EXPIRED

The Stanley People’s Initiative is looking for a new Chair

Could you guide a young organisation from start-up to success? Stanley People’s Initiative (SPI) is looking for a Chair of the Trustee Board who can bring significant commercial and managerial experience. This is a voluntary, unpaid role, although SPI will meet essential expenses.

We are a small charity founded to take Stanley Halls, South Norwood’s landmark Edwardian ‘town hall’, into community ownership as a performing arts centre, community venue, and enterprise hub. We have succeeded!

Croydon council finalised a community asset transfer on a 35-year lease in September 2015. Anchor tenants have moved in, and SPI is in a good financial position.

As core tenants, the Halls now has three performing arts groups -- South London Theatre and Aelfa Academy of Dramatic Arts, and The Lab Collective interactive theatre group – plus Nomad Labs photographic studio and the busy Coffee Craft café. Have a look at our website to see what’s on:

To build on this success, SPI needs a Chair who can offer practical leadership to the Trustees, Centre Manager, and staff.

We are looking for someone to lead us through developing the business plan as we move out of the current start-up phase, to ensure the Halls become a vibrant and financially resilient South London arts and community venue with London-wide appeal. At the heart of this will be working with the Centre Manager and other staff on the establishment of effective strategies and administrative systems to sustain a thriving, multi-functional venue.

Our major requirement is managerial and commercial experience.

Familiarity with performing arts or heritage buildings would be desirable, but is not essential, as it is available to the Board

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Management experience – SPI is in the start up phase of running a complex building, recruiting staff, and setting up administrative systems to meet organisational and regulatory requirements.
  • Commercial experience – to develop the business plan and marketing, and build up enterprise tenants for the office spaces.
  • Governance and committee experience – to work with other trustees and the staff to develop internal systems and culture.
  • A local base or ability to travel readily to South Norwood, SE25, to meet with staff and fellow trustees, attend events, and speak to local media.
  • Arts and heritage experience would be an advantage and is desirable.
  • Experience of bidding to Heritage Lottery Fund and other capital works grant funders would be desirable.

Time commitment:

  • Monthly board meetings
  • Regular supervision sessions with the Centre Manager
  • Time for meeting preparation, networking, and working with other board members on strategic matters

Interested candidates should contact our current chair, Councillor Kathy Bee: or 07788852385 for further information.

Application deadline: 11th July 2016

Stanley Halls is on South Norwood Hill, 5 mins from Norwood Junction station with fast rail links to London Bridge and East Croydon; direct trains to Victoria; London Overground trains

Registered charity no 1155680.
