The National Literacy Trust is recruiting volunteers for its flagship employability programme Words for Work and we need your help.

Do you want to use your professional experience to help some of Bradford’s most disadvantaged young people gain better understanding of the world of work, improving their life chances? We have received funding from a European donor to run our flagship employability programme in Bradford.

Our Words for Work programme takes place in secondary schools and focuses on improving young people’s communication, literacy and employability skills through:

•   exploring speaking and listening in the workplace
•   undertaking a range of literacy activities including exploring formal and informal language, effective questioning, the impact of body language and effective presentation

The volunteer role:

We are looking for volunteers from a wide range of professions and industries. Volunteers will help students develop the key communication skills that are vital in any workplace. Full training is provided and you will be supported throughout the programme by the Programme Manager.

Training: You will need to complete a short online training module and attend a school based induction session.

Workshops: You will take part in four workshops of no more than two hours each. These will be based at the school you’ve chosen to volunteer at and are usually arranged over four consecutive weeks at the same time each week. You will work with a small group of students on a range of activities introduced by the teacher leading the workshop.

Volunteers may be asked to complete a DBS check if the school requires it. This is free of charge for volunteers.

In return, you will:

•   Improve your coaching and leadership skills
•   Test your communication skills in a new environment
•   Enjoy the satisfaction of helping young people develop their skills and expand their life chances

Volunteer recruitment is open now. Our first projects are due to start in Bradford Schools in June 2016. For more information on taking part please contact Words for Work Project Manager, Lucy Kerrigan at or call on 0207 840 9556.
