The Winchester Live at Home Scheme is a local charity offering volunteer based support and friendship to older people living in their own homes; helping to maintain independent living, improve well-being and reduce isolation and loneliness. We aim to help older people maintain their independence by offering opportunities for companionship, support and advice. Winchester Live at Home Scheme is currently supported by about 115 volunteers that carry out a variety of roles such as Befriending, Driving and Club Helpers; we are always looking to increase the support we can offer to members by welcoming new volunteers to the team.

Befrienders - our befrienders regularly visit one of our members in the member's own home for a chat (usually weekly visits of about an hour). The aim is to reduce the members' feeling of isolation and loneliness. Our befriending scheme covers Winchester and the surrounding villages. Volunteers must have a caring nature with good listening and interpersonal skills.

Drivers - our drivers provide transport in their own vehicles. Regular weekly transport is required for all of our clubs and we also offer members one off transport for appointments such as doctors, hospital and dentist appointments. We can therefore offer drivers either flexible driving roles or regular fixed commitments. When using your own vehicle for transport you can claim expenses for mileage.

Weekly Clubs - Club Helpers

Monday Singing for Wellbeing - Singing for Wellbeing sessions take place on a Monday the first class is from 10.00am until 11.30am and the second class is from 11.45am until 1.15pm. The sessions aim to enhance Members' health and sense of wellbeing through music and song, making the group particularly important for those with memory problems or other long term health issues. Volunteers will be required set up the room with tables and chairs and clear them away after the club, welcome the members in on arrival, serve refreshments and clear up the kitchen, join in with the group singing and generally support the smooth running of the club.

Weekly Exercise Plus and Seated Exercise Clubs - We run a variety of Exercise Plus and Seated Exercise Clubs throughout the week (please contact us for details of current availability for Volunteers). They are held at various times and locations (in and around Winchester) throughout the week.

The classes are taught by a qualified Instructor. The Exercise Plus sessions are designed to maintain and improve posture, strength, balance and stamina. Our Seated Exercise sessions are for those who are less able or who suffer with memory problems. They are aimed at improving flexibility and improving joint movement.

Volunteers are required to assist with the smooth running of the clubs by welcoming members in on arrival, setting up the exercise equipment and chairs, clearing away equipment after the class, providing refreshments (teas, coffees and biscuits) and supporting the Members and Instructor during the class.

Fortnightly Friday Lunch Club - Our Lunch Club is held on alternate Fridays - we prepare and serve a hot two-course lunch for around 50 people. Volunteers are required to set up the room with tables and chairs, lay the tables, welcome and assist Members, serve the food and drinks, clear away plates, tidy the hall after the club and put away the tables and chairs. Once volunteers have gained experience there is potential to progress into the kitchen to help with preparing food/operating the dishwasher. We currently have a lovely team of about 10 Volunteers who run this Club but we are always looking for more help!

Fortnightly Friday Activity Day - Our Activity Day is held on alternate Fridays - we have a variety of art and craft activities including painting, knitting and card making, as well as table tennis, puzzles and games. Volunteers are required for setting up tables and chairs, assisting members with arts and crafts, clearing equipment away after the club, preparing teas and coffees and a light sandwich lunch and clearing the kitchen afterwards.

If you are interested in helping out, please apply by going to or you can email with your details, which area of volunteering you are interested in and more information about yourself and your availability. We ask that all volunteers can commit to 6 - 12 months volunteering with the Scheme. You will need to follow an application process which includes completing an Application Form (with details of 2 characters references who they have known for at least 2 years), a DBS check (for Befrienders and Drivers) and a Volunteer Induction (which takes about an hour in our office).
