Volunteer Deputy Launching Authority - Broughty Ferry Lifeboat

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We provide an on call, 24/7 lifeboat search and rescue service around the UK and Ireland, and a seasonal lifeguard service. With our lifeboats, lifeguards, flood rescue teams and safety messages we are committed to saving more lives.

The RNLI's Lifeboat Station in Broughty Ferry, Dundee is looking for a volunteer to take on the role of Deputy Launching Authority (DLA).

The first lifeboat on the River Tay was stationed at Buddon Ness in 1830 followed by a lifeboat at Broughty Ferry in 1859. The operation of both of these lifeboats was taken over by the RNLI in 1861. Although the Buddon Ness station closed in 1894, Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Station now serves the community along the River Tay and St Andrews Bay and is equipped to carry out search and rescue operations to 100 miles offshore.

Broughty Ferry is one of the busiest lifeboat stations in Scotland. In 2016, the two lifeboats stationed at Broughty Ferry launched a total of 92 times.

The Station has a full time Coxswain and Mechanic. All other personnel are volunteers and include Station Officials, Boat and Shore Crew. All station personnel follow the RNLI's Competency Based Training Scheme and respond when there is a request, normally from HM Coastguard, to launch the lifeboats. The wider team associated with the Station include volunteer Fundraisers, Community Safety Officer, Press Officer and Youth Education Presenters.

The role of DLA is to authorise launch of the lifeboats, provide leadership in the absence of the Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) or as delegated and ensure that all operational activities are carried out to maintain the lifeboats and all associated equipment in a constant state of readiness for launching on service.

This is a good opportunity to join a motivated and enthusiastic local team and have the satisfaction of contributing to saving lives at sea.

If you are a team player with leadership skills and local maritime knowledge this could be the role for you. You should live or work within 3 miles of the Lifeboat Station located at Fisher Street, Broughty Ferry and be between 17 and 70 years of age.

Please apply online. For further information contact the RNLI's Volunteering Team on 01202 663346, by email at or contact the LOM on 07802 410 780.
