The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. We provide, on call, a 24 hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the UK and Ireland, and a seasonal lifeguard service. With our lifeboats, lifeguards, safety messages and flood rescue we are committed to saving more lives.
The RNLI’s Lifeboat Station at Humber is looking for volunteers to join the existing team of full-time crew in the role of All Weather Lifeboat Crew.
Humber Lifeboat Station is located on the East Yorkshire coast. Due to the remote location of the station combined with the strategic positioning of RNLI SAR assets, Humber Lifeboat Station is the only coastal lifeboat station with a full time crew. The station is not accessible by standard road vehicles so the last few miles of the journey will be provided by the stations Land Rover.
The station is comprised of several buildings including a station and communal galley, two workshops & accommodation buildings. The full time crew consists of 10 members of staff, 5 on each shift, working a 6 days on 6 days off rotation. In addition to the full time staff the station is supported by relief crew and volunteers. The full time nature of the station affords the opportunity for visiting crew, be it staff or volunteers, to gain from the experience of working as part of the Humber crew.
Normally our volunteer crew have to live or work close to our lifeboat stations in order to be able to respond to the pagers within a very short time frame. However, due to the location of Humber Lifeboat Station, the volunteering opportunity here is slightly different; instead of living or working close to the station and responding to a pager, we are looking for volunteers who can instead commit a couple of full days or more a month (on a flexible basis) and live within 99 miles of Humber station.
In return for your commitment, while volunteering at the station you’ll have a place to stay, excellent training, development opportunities and all the kit needed to keep you safe at sea. The role of ALB Crew is to undertake and maintain competency Based Training as necessary to fulfil the role of crew member. You don’t need to be from a maritime background. In fact, the majority of our volunteers these days do not have this type of experience.
This is a great opportunity to join a motivated and enthusiastic local team and have the satisfaction of contributing to saving lives at sea. It allows those people who don’t live or work close to a station, to get involved with our lifesaving charity.
If you are a team player with good general fitness and the ability to learn new skills this could be the role for you. No previous maritime experience needed. You must live within 99 miles of the station and be between 17 and 65 years of age.
