A university based in Bedfordshire are seeking to appoint a Research Contracts Manager on a 12-month fixed term contract. You will be required to attend the office for a minimum of once a week (the team goes in on a Wednesday).


Please be aware that the role isn't near a train station so you would need to be a car driver.
The role is full- time, 37 hours per week and flexible working will be considered.


Job purpose:
The post holder will be responsible for reviewing and negotiating the terms and conditions of a
diverse range of research contracts and agreements with conflicting critical pathways, identifying
and mitigating risks to ensure that they do not expose the University to unreasonable risk and to
ensure that they comply with the University's status as an educational charity, current legislation, and internal policies and procedures.

Using own knowledge of the law and drawing on best practice from across the higher education
sector, the post holder will be required to interpret terms and conditions, assess the potential risks
associated with each contract and, where necessary, to draft effective and pragmatic alternative
terms and conditions which protect the University's business interests, often in a complex context,
coordinating several parties to bring about a successful conclusion.

Key duties:

  • Review and negotiate a diverse portfolio of research and consultancy contracts and agreements for national and international clients on behalf of the University
  • Preparing and editing research and consultancy contracts and agreements based around University model documents or modify previously accepted documents
  • Working pro-actively with employees at all levels across the University and with external stakeholders to ensure that research and consultancy contracts and agreements are correctly understood and that risks are mitigated.
  • Managing a large portfolio of diverse and often challenging research and consultancy contracts and agreements with conflicting critical pathways, determining individual workflow and activity scheduling in order to meet deadlines
  • Building and developing a broad and useful network of fellow professionals across the University and in other universities together with external business communities and their professional advisors.
  • Frequent communication with customers and suppliers at all levels on a national and international basis up to CEO level and with their professional advisors will be required when negotiating terms and conditions. Effective negotiation skills are essential in this role.

Essential experience:

  • Law Degree or equivalent or significant practical experience in a comparable role.
  • Demonstrable contracts drafting and negotiation experience
  • Sound knowledge of commercial law.
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • A strong communicator and negotiator
