Cruse Bereavement Care is the leading national charity for bereaved people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We offer support, advice and information to children, young people and adults when someone dies and work to enhance society's care of bereaved people.
The National Helpline is a key part of Cruse's services - it's often the first point of contact for people desperate for help making that very brave initial step to get support. The calls can vary immensely with no two shifts being the same. We offer immediate support by both phone and email, explore the circumstances with the caller and together work out what options are available. This can be challenging work but is very rewarding. Have a look at our Helpline Volunteer Person Specification to find out more.
Our permanent support staff are based in Richmond-upon-Thames and many of our volunteers come to the helpline office there to work their shifts but we also have a growing group of volunteers across the country working remotely, usually from their homes.
In addition to your initial training we have compulsory supervision, a programme of Continuing Professional Development and additional relevant training courses. The safety and wellbeing of our volunteers is paramount and our ongoing support reflects this.
We need predictability and consistency to be there for our callers. We ask that you commit to one four-hour helpline shift each week, for a minimum period of one year.
The training is comprehensive and consists of Cruse's Bereavement Support Foundation course followed by the Helpline Elective which teaches telephone skills and the particular range of expertise required for helpline support. After acceptance as a helpline volunteer your induction includes full training in the technology required.
