Link Up Volunteering
Sight loss affects an estimated two million people in the UK, and with an ageing population this figure is set to rise. In addition to the trauma of sight loss, many people suffer further health, social and economic difficulties as a result.
Many people find difficulty with attending events and activities such as going to the theatre, going to an arts class or joining in a sporting event.
One of the Thomas Pocklington Trust's key objectives is to empower blind and partially sighted people to participate in this sort of leisure activity. We believe we can do this by using our trained volunteers to support people in pursuing their favourite hobbies through our new project called 'Link Up'.
How can Link Up help?
'Link Up' is a new London-based service currently being developed with the aim of enabling people with sight loss (aged 18+) living in London to attend events and participate in activities with the support of a volunteer. Such events could be going to the theatre or cinema, attending exhibitions, or participating in arts and crafts sessions and sporting events.
The focus of 'Link Up' is on events that the person with sight loss would like to attend which are not a necessity - so trips such as visiting the doctor, or going out shopping would not be included.
How will Link Up work?
A pool of Link Up volunteers will be recruited, trained and CRB checked. A database with their interests will be maintained and they will become volunteer members of the service.
People wishing to use the service will also become members - it will be free to join and all you will need to do is complete an application form which will also record details of the leisure interests you have. These details will be recorded on our database.
Once volunteers' and service users' leisure interests have been identified, we will then do our best to ensure that these are matched up when we receive a request for volunteer support at an event. That way we can avoid sending volunteers to a football match when they'd really rather be at the National Gallery!
There will be some rules to follow for both volunteers and service users so that everyone knows what to expect. The main information you need to know is:
- The service user will be expected to put together all the event details, book places/tickets and finalise plans, once the volunteer has been in contact to confirm their attendance.
- The service user will be expected to meet the costs of their own transport and entrance/ticket fees.
- The service user will not be expected to pay for any volunteer costs.
- The volunteer will be able to claim back all agreed expenses, including transport and entrance/ticket fees, from Pocklington.
- Both the volunteer and the service user will be required to provide emergency contact details to enable them to become members of the scheme.
