We are proud to be working with the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the UK to recruit for a new Head of Standards and Regulation to lead the standards function of the organisation, which monitors editorial standards; acts positively to support good journalism and high editorial standards; and takes targeted action where it identifies shortcomings.
This is an amazing opportunity to head up an evolving and innovative function which has been established for only 4 years. You will be expected to refine and shape the work of the department, including identifying opportunities to increase its reach and impact. The role is expected to develop over time based on the post holder's focus.
As someone who has proven experience at a senior level of developing and delivering business plans and strategy around standards within a regulatory, standards, legal or broader public services environment, you will draw up a strategy and an annual business plan for the Standards function to achieve its purpose: to monitor, maintain and uphold editorial standards; whilst also working to promote and embed awareness of and commitment to compliance and accountability across the industry.
You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build internal and external relationships to engage with stakeholders, often about difficult and emotive issues, with sensitivity and tact, as well as translate complex legal and other documents into clear, concise and accurate plain English in order to ensure the engagement of the industry with the standards.
Also you will have analytical and problem solving skills to analyse potentially competing perspectives and contentious issues; work creatively to develop and consider various solutions to raising standards and disseminating this; and anticipate any problems in implementation.
Having the ability to lead, motivate and develop a team of two, you will work collaboratively to promote high levels of performance as well as assist and manage other project areas across the organisation.
