Summary

All trustees are responsible for SUF’s financial management and for approving the financial statements / accounts.

The finance trustee draws on their skills and experience to enhance the board’s discharge of its financial responsibilities.

This profile is in addition to the generic trustee role profile which covers trustee/director responsibilities.

Finance Trustee Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead trustee in assisting the board to scrutinise financial reports.
  • Advise on good financial governance including systems, controls, reporting and monitoring.
  • Advise the board on its reserves and investment policies.
  • Chair board finance group meetings (if requested by the Board Chair).
  • Act as a board link (along with the CEO and company secretary) to the Independent Examiner, if required.
  • Advise the board on the management of financial risks including those that might impact on SUF’s medium to long term sustainability.
  • Propose improvements, if needed, to SUF’s financial systems including asset management.
  • Advise the board on the financial implications of its strategy.
  • Act as a counter-signatory for bank accounts or other legal documents if required.
  • Act as a lead trustee in the scrutiny of funding applications (from a financial perspective).
  • Alert the board should proposed expenditure appear not to be aligned with SUF’s charitable objects.

Person Specification (additional to generic trustee requirements):

  • Essential: Book-keeping or accountancy experience.
  • Desirable: Accountancy qualification, experience of SAGE or similar software, experience of charity finance.

Time Commitment

You will be required to commit to around half a day per month, including ten Trustee Board meetings a year and the AGM.
