Director of Policy and Public Affairs
This is an outstanding opportunity for an exceptional individual to join the Institute of Physics (IoP) and to take the Executive lead for developing and delivering an ambitious programme of policy, public affairs and external engagement work. This role will deliver on the key elements of the bold and ambitious new strategy.
The IOP is a leading scientific society, with a membership ranging from students to those at the top of their fields in academia, business, education and government. Their purpose is to gather, inspire, guide, represent and celebrate all who share a passion for physics and ensure that the IOP delivers on its exceptional potential to benefit society.
The IOP’s new organisational strategy identifies three urgent priorities:
- Ensuring that the Physics profession reflects the diversity of society, making sure all young people have access to world-class physics education and training, investing in critical technical skills and closing the STEM skills gap:
- Making sure that the UK and Ireland are able to realise the full benefits of the next technological and industrial revolution; and
- Supporting informed debate so that citizens can participate in discussions and decision-making about issues that affect them
The IOP are seeking an exceptional Director to play a critical role on their executive team; responsible for the quality and impact of policy work, building and maintaining relationships with strategic partners in the UK, Ireland, Europe and further afield, and also for increasing the visibility and impact of the IOP’s policy work.
You will have a passion for science and policy, possess a drive for results and be a natural team player and consensus builder who can inspire people with their ideas, plans and leadership skills. With a track record of leading high performing and influential policy and/or public affairs teams, and of delivering high quality and influential policy programmes, you will have successfully directed multidisciplinary teams to deliver major projects, and developed successful strategies for engaging, informing and influencing decision makers and opinion formers.
