About Us

Jinja DEAF (Deaf Education Access Fund) is a charity supporting the education of deaf children and young people in Jinja District, Uganda.

We promote equal access to education and employment with a focus on quality sign- bilingual education and promote activities which foster understanding and inclusion within their families and communities.

Our current activities include funding full-time sign language instructors and interpreters in schools, providing grants for learning materials and sponsoring sign language and inclusion workshops for parents and educators.

For these young people, this support means the difference between gaining an education, fluent communication, opportunities and social relationships, and staying home in isolation, devalued and without language or hope for change.

The current board is made up of 6 volunteer trustees based around the UK with mixed backgrounds.

About the Role

We are looking to recruit a trustee to take over secretarial matters. This means arranging and preparing for our executive committee meetings, taking meeting minutes, ensuring our compliance with the Charities Regulator and that all decisions and actions are accurately recorded and carried out in line with our governing document.

The secretary is a trustee, so of course a participant in all trustee discussions and decisions. Our current secretary is available to provide a detailed handover and be an initial support to the incoming post-holder.

This role can be carried out entirely remotely. Our board meet three to six times per year in London or remotely and communicate by email in the interim. We plan fundraising, steer administrative decisions and closely monitor activities and spending to ensure responsible scrutiny of funds. All trustees are volunteers, and we have no office so all money raised by our generous supporters is directed to our activities.

About You

No formal qualification is required. If you have some knowledge of charity law and the voluntary sector and would love to make a big difference to a small charity, then we would like to hear from you. Ideally a commitment of at least three years would be welcomed.
