The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) are the go-to organisation when it comes to UK marine issues, with offices in Herefordshire, London and Edinburgh, and we're seeking a new Chair for our Board of Trustees.
Our vision is Seas Full of Life - seas and coasts where nature flourishes and people thrive, which we aim to achieve through our mission to make political, cultural and social change for healthy seas and coasts that support abundant marine wildlife, sustainable livelihoods and enjoyment for all.
For over thirty years, we have been the voice for the sea - for all the fascinating creatures that live beneath the waves, from basking sharks to gobeys; for our breath-taking coastal environment; for all those who make a sustainable living from the sea, and for everyone who simply enjoys visiting the beach with its beautiful coastline. Blue Planet II and Sky Ocean Rescue have energised the public to recognise that we have to clean up and protect our seas. We're fighting the tide of microplastics, wet wipes, plastic bottles and straws, ever present in the news.
Our advocacy work ensures the seas around the UK are better protected and are properly managed so they work for the benefit of all. We successfully campaign for change - with the introduction of carrier bag charges, bans on microbeads in personal care products, the spotlight on 'non-flushables' , all because of MCS. We have also been at the forefront of encouraging the nation to choose sustainable seafood. Our Good Fish Guide has improved the sustainability of the seafood in over 300 million meals in the last year. MCS believes in grass roots community involvement with thousands of volunteers helping beach cleans around the British Isles. We also mobilised our volunteers for Capturing our Coast - the largest citizen science data collection programme in UK waters.
We're looking for an experienced Chair to support the Board and CEO in driving MCS' strategy over our next period of development. This is a key opportunity to lead the Board of a progressive and ambitious charity, working with a dynamic and enthusiastic team, and to play an important role in the future of marine conservation. A strategic, visionary leader with a high profile in your field, you must also have a good understanding of the charity and commercial sectors and a passion for our seas and marine life. You will act as an ambassador for our work at the highest levels, support the charity's fundraising activities and lead the strategic direction and governance of the organisation through a period of sustained development.
