Youth Work stretches to different areas of the community, such as with young people who have suffered abuse, young offenders, youth centres, leaving care, youth development.
The main responsibilities involved in Youth Worker jobs is to work with young people in the community to facilitate their personal, social and educational development. Duties for Youth Workers include: developing honest relationships with young people in a supportive environment, making plans and developing programmes/ activities to meet young people’s needs, supporting them in addressing any issues they face, assessing their needs, such as numeracy and ensuring additional support is provided if necessary.
Youth Workers must have previous experience of working with young people and a good understanding of the issues young people face. Some roles require a NVQ qualification in youth work or a community learning qualification, but often training will be given. Good communication skills and being a team player are essential for Youth Worker jobs. Knowledge of equal opportunities, safeguarding and child protection are also important.
