Practice Managers work within the medical sector, overseeing the smooth operation of GP surgeries. Depending on the capacity of the role, Practice Manager jobs can involve running a single or a group of practices. Practice Managers are accountable for planning and implementing budgets at maximum efficiency.

Typical Practice Manager jobs require attending regular meetings allowing the GPs to concentrate on the care of the patients whilst managing various departments and operations. Practice Managers are usually the figurehead of a surgery and are in charge of the following:-

  • All IT systems (patient records and appointments)
  • Recruitment of new staff
  • Training staff to adhere with internal protocols
  • Management of all support staff
  • Ensuring the quality of care for patients
  • The budget and QOF
  • All health and safety guidelines, practice security and cleaning
  • All stock levels of supplies including medical equipment, drugs and stationery
  • Assessing the local health service requirements, in order to then execute new services to the benefit of the patients

Whilst practice management jobs have no clear direct career path, they require experience in managing and motivating people as well as direct experience of working within a GP practice or in the NHS. This is a challenging, but extremely rewarding role, which ensures the best level of care for thousands of people.
