International Students House (ISH) is one of the leading charities providing support and accommodation services for international and UK university students. ISH’s mission has remained the same which is to promote international understanding and friendship. Over 100,000 international students study in London and the charity has over 600 students in residence in their three buildings in Regent’s Park and one in Balham. The House provides housing and support services for international and UK undergraduate and postgraduate students, single and couples, from over 100 nations and from over 60 degree awarding institutions and is the most diverse student residential community in the UK.

The Council of Governors are the legal trustees of the House, and ISH are looking for up to three Governors to join the Council whose membership over the years has included Vice Chancellors, senior executives from private industry and the professions, and successful alumni of International Students House. The House is looking for individuals who have senior experience in the private, public or charitable sector and who can bring their entrepreneurial, property, management and governance skills to assist the charity in delivering its mission.

Key Responsibilities

Each Governor should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. This will involve:

  • Acquiring sufficient knowledge about international education and related matters in order to contribute at least to broad discussions on the subject; 
  • Scrutinising and evaluating board papers; 
  • Leading and / or contributing positively to discussions; 
  • Serving as a member of a sub-committee; 
  • Focusing on key issues; 
  • Providing guidance on new initiatives; 
  • Making a particular contribution in areas where the Trustee has special expertise;
  • Acting as an advocate for the Charity.

Person Specification

International Students House intends to recruit Governors who will also be members of an appropriate sub–committee and who may be prepared to occupy the posts of Chair and Vice Chair in the future.

The successful candidates will be drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and especially welcome would be individuals with experience and knowledge from the travel and hospitality industry, fundraising, property, higher education and IT. They will be able to provide a range of skills and experience, including:

  • Senior strategic level experience in the private, public or charitable sector; 
  • Experience of managing organisations through periods of significant change; 
  • A good communicator with an inquiring mind and a willingness to challenge constructively; 
  • Strong analytical skills, judgement and decision-making; 
  • Board level experience gained in either an executive or non-executive capacity;
  • Preferably a wide range of international experience; 
  • An appreciation of the distinct values and mission of International Students House;
  • Financially astute with an understanding of finance systems.

Time Commitment

The Board meets four times a year and the sub committees normally meet four times a year. In addition, there are many evening social events for our residents which Governors will be invited to attend and which will give you the opportunity to meet the charity’s recipients. You would normally be expected to attend two of these events a year. All meetings are in Regent’s Park, London on dates fixed 1 year in advance and are normally timed to commence at around 5.00 to 5.30 PM. All Governors are subject to re-election after three years.
