Organisation: Action on Elder Abuse.

Are you empathetic? A good listener? Have a keen interest in supporting vulnerable older people?

If the answer is yes, then Action on Elder Abuse currently have opportunities available to you.

We are seeking Telephone Peer Support volunteers to support clients who have experienced elder abuse. The service aims to provide assistance to such individuals in their recovery from abuse.

As a Peer Support volunteer you will build rapport with the client and will be matched based on shared common interests. Once support has been established, weekly telephone calls will take place between you as the volunteer and the client.

We are seeking volunteers who have a connection to East Sussex (working, living or studying), more specifically Brighton and Hove initially.

As a Telephone Peer Support volunteer, you will call a client once-twice a week, sharing stories and experiences, perhaps advocating on their behalf, some of which could include: advocating on their behalf, sharing experiences, encouraging them to make decisions and choices, when they have perhaps felt unable to do so due to the abuse. It aims to reduce isolation and encourage reintegration back into their community.

As a volunteer we ask that you:

  • Possess good communication skills.
  • Are empathetic and a good listener.
  • Understanding of the issues that surround elder abuse.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality Commitment to Action on Elder Abuse ethos.

Supervision and training will be provided regularly.
