Supporters Direct is a not-for-profit organisation which helps fans to set up democratic cooperatives (known as supporters' trusts) to gain influence in the running and ownership of their clubs. We currently operate in football and rugby league with the potential to expand into other sports. We exist because we are needed: Football, in particular, can be better run and should be more responsive to the needs of its fans and local communities. We work in England and Wales, Scotland and across Europe in more than 20 countries. Our budgeted turnover is the order of £1 million per annum.
We are looking for a Non-Exec Finance Director to be Co-opted onto our main Board.
Our Board members are spread across the UK, and meet up 6 times a year (approx. 3 in London, 1 in Scotland and a strategy day usually held in Manchester). Our AGM is held in July. Attendance at these meetings would be the very minimum commitment we would require and we would encourage you to be as proactive as possible.
Role and person specification:
*Lead the board in its oversight of the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
*Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.
*Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation.
*Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits.
*Work with staff and board members to ensure the financial viability of the organisation.
*Make fellow Board members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
*Advise and assist in developing the financial skills and understanding of both the Board and Staff.
*Analyse the reported financial position at committee and board meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc).
*Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
*Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.
*Lead on board involvement with appointing and liaising with auditors.
Skills and experience
*Qualified accountant with senior management experience
*Good working knowledge of the day-to-day managerial and financial issues faced in a small not for profit organisation
*Ability to understand tax issues with regard to not-for-profit organisations (e.g. VAT and partial recovery, international trading, corporation tax, payroll taxes)
*Good financial analysis skills.
*Ability to communicate finance concepts clearly to a non-financial audience.
