Job Description - EXPIRED

Are you looking to put your expertise in finance to good use? Do you want to support better care of people in their own home by nurses? Are you interested in contributing to a well-established national charity with a great reputation? If so……would you like to become our Treasurer and Trustee?

Who we are:
The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) is a long standing and distinguished charity dedicated to improving nursing in the home and community.  Founded in 1887 by the Rathbone family, the QNI exists to ensure that patients nursed at home and in the community receive high quality care.  We do this by supporting community nurses in their work and, funding innovations to improve services.

We also play a key role influencing policy-makers and Governments in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and campaigning to improve the quality of nursing care in the home.  Based in London, the QNI is a thriving charity with strong financial foundations and governance arrangements.  We recently moved into larger premises to accommodate our expanding team.

What we are looking for:
The QNI needs a new Honorary Treasurer and Trustee to oversee the charity’s finances.  We are looking for someone with wide ranging financial experience at a senior level and is committed to improving nursing in the home and community.  This is a non-remunerated position, but reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed.  We have a finance manager and expect the role of Treasurer to require around 15 days’ work per year, including time for reading and preparation as well as attendance at meetings. The QNI is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications from all who have:

  • Experience of financial management and an understanding of investment instruments and strategies
  • A recognised accounting qualification
  • Inter-personal and people management skills and a team player
  • A high degree of personal and professional ethics and integrity

A description of the role:
The Treasurer contributes to strategy and direction of the QNI and exercises oversight of financial matters in accordance with good practice, the governing document (the Royal Charter) and legal requirements. The Treasurer reports to the board of trustees (the Council) at regular intervals on the financial health of the organisation.  All trustees share equal responsibility for financial and accounting matters.

Specific responsibilities:

  • To maintain sound financial management of the charity’s resources and ensuring expenditure is in line with the charity’s objects and strategy
  • To review the investment strategies and risk profile of the QNI’s investments, ensuring there is the relevant liquidity to meet operating expenditure requirements.  To act as a key liaison with the QNI’s fund managers regarding the investment of its funds and assets.
  • To overview, the preparation and presentation of budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements to the Council after discussion with the Chief Executive and Finance Manager.
  • The Treasurer will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place, and are appropriate for the QNI.
  • To be instrumental in the development and implementation of financial, reserves and investment policies.
  • To chair the quarterly Finance and General Purposes Committee and reporting back to the Council and attending the quarterly Council meeting.
  • To monitor and advise Council on the financial position of the QNI after liaising with the charity’s auditors.
  • To work with the Chief Executive and Finance Manager to ensure that the charity’s annual accounts are compliant with the current Charities SORP.
  • To contribute to the fundraising strategy of the organisation.
