Activity Support Volunteer
St Mungo’s
St Mungo’s supports people to find solutions to their housing, employment, training and health needs. Encouraging the people who use their services to take part in social, leisure and informal learning opportunities, and to make their own decisions about the kinds of activities they want to take part in, is a really important part of what they do.
St Mungo’s Activity Programme, offered throughout our hostels and services, is often someone’s first step to thinking about their aspirations and going on to access services for employment and learning.
Helping build self-confidence, social and life skills, our activities programme is as varied as the people who take part in it. As a volunteer supporting the programme, you can do something simple that make a really big difference.
You can help run a coffee afternoon, a newspaper, book or discussion group, help run a general social group or assist in running film, music and general clubs reflecting people’s interests. You will also support clients to make the most of local facilities including cinemas, cafes, museums, art galleries, sports and leisure facilities.
You will share their skills, interests or passions – whether it’s for cooking, playing music, photography, art, drama or other hobbies you have.
Once a week you will attend a project with a regular group activity taking place in the local community/St Mungo’s project in borough or neighbouring borough. They would like people who are available during the day, evenings and at weekends. Monthly feedback forms will need to be completed and you will attend quarterly networks with other volunteers.
For these roles you should have an awareness of the causes of homelessness and other forms of social exclusion, and the impact this has on people. Realise the importance of boundaries in working with vulnerable people and able to create a rapport and build trusting relationships with our clients. You must be supportive of finding solutions and have a problem-solving attitude and keen to support disadvantaged or vulnerable people in an innovative and creative way.
They would like volunteers to commit to a minimum of 6 months. Over this time you will receive quarterly supervisions with other volunteers, induction training and ongoing on the job learning and access to related courses.
