In a charity, the Internal Auditor’s job involves undertaking audits to ensure that the charity’s finance function is operating efficiently and effectively whilst ensuring compliance. Jobs in charity auditing are very similar to those in the private sector. A charity’s Internal Auditor will develop procedures to independently report on the finance function and risks.
Typically, the Internal Auditor is in a key position to offer advice on streamlining systems and procedures, in order to ensure good internal controls are in place. Depending on the size of the organisation, they will either work within an audit team and therefore report into the Head of Internal Audit or work as a separate yet supportive arm to the core finance function, reporting findings to the Director of Finance. Typically, candidates for internal audit jobs will need to be fully qualified (IIA or CCAB). Qualifying whilst working for one of the ‘big four’ is highly desirable and well recognised within the not for profit sector.
